If you don't know by now I have a massive crush on Frankmusik, I have a thing for awkwardly cute guys who have musical talent. Anyway this song has become my latest obsession, it's one of his older singles.

Cover Art: The Killers "I Got Soul" covered by "Young Soul Rebels"

Artists from the Island Records division of Universal Music group covered a new version of "I Got Soul" all funds of the selling of the single going to War Child. Young Soul Rebels consists of VV Brown, Frankmusik, MPHO, N-Dubz, Pixie Lott, Tinchy Stryder, Kid British, Chipmunk, McLean, Ironik, Domino Go, Bashy, Egypt, and the London Community Gospel Choir. I am already a pretty big Frankmusik and VV Brown supporter and I actually think the entire group did a good job remaking the single...even Tinchy. Although the video is sure corny. I mean I know its supposed to reminiscent of "We Are The World" and all but it's so sappy, and everyone in the video looks like they are giving themselves one big pat on the back and saying: "look at me! I am so deep! I like kids! I don't like wars! Look at me singing, I look so moved! Please buy my album..." So minus the barftastic cornball video the song is good.

Spin just did an article about the "white soul trend." And all I can say is I don't care what skin color they are as long as they are making decent music. I basically summarized all the various artists below but the article is here.

Mr Hudson - Supernova
Blond Englishmen croons with a little help from his friends (Kanye West and Auto-Tune). Although the vibe of the song is pretty decent.




Daniel Merriweather - Change
More philosophical than Hudson just as experimental this time backed by Wale and Mark Ronson. Definitely more old school feeling, I think he's my favorite soul singer thus far.

This time an American versus an Aussie (Merriweather) supported by Lupe Fiasco. However its really Lupe's song.

Better than Kanye's version by a mile.

Mentioned this man on my June Playlist seriously check this guy out he does amazing things. I'll put money on him blowing up in the next two years he's just too good to remain obscure.

I Think I'm in Love with Frankmusik

If you check out my July Playlist blog post I featured a indie power pop musician called Frankmusik. The song I featured was called "Confusion Girl" you can read that posting here. Anyways I have started to obsessively listen to his other stuff and I love him! His music is just great catchy power pop, he almost reminds of the male version of Robyn. Plus, he is not too bad to look at (I would marry him if not for the horrible haircut in "Better off as Two"). Which obviously makes his music even better! On the eyes at least. Anyways check him out.

July Playlist

V V Brown - "Shark in the Water" its refreshing to know some rhythm and blues hasn't lost it's soul. Its a great song with strong vocals, production and songwriting. Beyonce, after the "Sasha Fierce" fiasco its time to take some notes.



Frankmusik - "Confusion Girl" normally a guy with such a high pitched voice would annoy me, but Franmusik makes it work, not to mention that the production on this song makes it unbelievably catchy.



Fanfarlo - "The Walls are Coming Down" a romantic little indie tune, that reminds me of a more melancholy Matt Pond PA, with some Grizzly Bear thrown in.



Robbers On High Street - "The Fatalist" once in a while I like to resurrect some of my favorite older songs in my music collection on these playlists, this one is from 2006.



Holly Mcnarland - "Beautiful Blue" I have recently rediscovered this song and it is still just as beautiful as it was back in 2002.



Lucky Soul - "Lips are Unhappy" forget eighties nostalgia or even the calls of the seventies (MGMT, Chairlift) Lucky Soul go all the way back to the early 1960s.


The Big Pink - "Velvet" The name of the band might be questionable but the slick cool tunes they create leaves little doubt in my mind that they are going to be big in the indie scene.



Rose Elinor Dougal - "Start/Stop/Synchro" indie synth folk, a la Kate Bush.



Savoir Adore - "MERP" not a huge fan of the music video, but I dig the organic sound. I have a soft spot for chorus like boy-girl shouting indie groups I guess (The Go! Team, Los Campesionos!, Broken Social Scene) but hey it works.
